1. What do you think should be done regarding the proposed new high school and why?
I believe that we have an obligation to provide the very best
educational experiences to our children in order that they can best
compete in an ever-evolving world. A state of the art school,
equipped to take advantage of the 21st century technology and designed
to adapt for future needs will be a major step in that direction. The
implementation of new energy-efficient innovations and designs will not
only save the county money by reducing the costs of utilities, but will
also model responsible environmental management.
With funding already in place thanks to the educational assessment
implemented in 2005, we have the ability to build such a new facility
with a financing plan that will have little or no additional impact on
our tax rates. It would be foolish to waste this opportunity.

1. What do you think should be done regarding the proposed new high school and why?
I will begin my answer by including a copy of the letter I sent to Jim
Deal, all Board of County Commissioner members and all School Board
members in early April of this year.

Dear Jim,
Attached, for your information, is a copy of the body of a “letter to
the editor” I completed late last week. It concerns Watauga High
School and contains a different or expanded approach to providing an
appropriate high school facility for Watauga County.

Questions for candidates for Watauga County Commissioner:
1. What do you think should be done regarding the proposed new high school and why?
The young people of Watauga County deserve a first class high school
facility. I believe there is a substantial price differential between
the cost of a new parcel and the offers made for the current facility.
That money can be used to reduce the cost of a new facility on a site
that is better suited. A new school will better prepare students for
the world, with relevant instruction, increased vocational
opportunities and pride that will improve the graduation rate. If
elected, I will make decisions that put our children first, and provide
the best long term decisions that are cost effective for the County.

Replies from Mary Moretz, Candidate for Watauga County Commissioner, District 1 http://www.maryemoretz.com 1. What do you think should be done regarding the proposed new high school and why?
We must build a new high school for our students. I know. I began
teaching there in 1965 when I was just out of college and I retired at
the end of June 2005.
First, the building is not a safe place. It has sixty-seven outside
doors that are impossible to secure in case of intruders. Ask our
security officer, the administrators, and our sheriff all of whom are
very concerned about this issue. Furthermore, a very long portion of
the building is constructed up against a bank that suddenly becomes a
sharp drop-off making it impossible for fire trucks to get to in case
of a fire. The electrical system is old and overloaded making the
possibility of fire that much greater.
